I realize this is going to sound crazy but I bought a curved sofa off FBMP for $150 that I want to make straight. Like I said, crazy. This sofa is pretty much like new, with 8 way tied springs with metal strapping underneath, high end fabric and there is no sag what so ever in any of the cushions. I would assume this sofa cost around $2500 if not more when it was originally purchased. I say curved but the sofa is not exactly curved. The two sides are square with the middle seat cushion angled on both sides. My plan would be to remove the back, bottom and front/under seat area. Rebuild the front and back framing, reconfigure any springs in the middle section, then recover using the same fabric. I will then have to take apart the two middle cushions and re-sew the bottom one square and just shorten the length of the top one. I have built wooden furniture before as well as cabinets, additions and entire houses, so the construction of the couch should be no big deal. I will probably use plywood for any new wood. I have sewn only a handful of times but have watched plenty of videos on how to sew cushions together, so pulling them apart without destroying them will be difficult but I don’t think putting them back together will be. I have also watched quite a few videos on how a couch is upholstered.
Besides your input on whether this is even a project worth taking on, I would like to get some input on tools that I may need for the job. I plan to purchase a decent furniture stapler as well as staple and stitch removing tools. I would like some input on what would be the most durable string to use for sewing. Other than that, I am not really sure what else I will need that cannot be repurposed.

What thread to use is really dependent on what sewing machine you have. I would use a V 92 (TEX 90) but most (if not all) domestic machines would handle a thread that size.

Also, it appears to have pipping along the top and bottom of the boxing. Does your machine have a pipping foot?

I’ll have to pull the sewing machine out and see if I can get a piping foot for it. Thanks for that and the tread recommendation.
