Finally alive. Every adjustment that could be misadjusted - was screwed up. Got it to sew and it runs! Any speed, 4-6 layers of leather or as much as I can put under feet - no problem. Still need to do some tiny adjustments to make reverse stitch just perfect, other then that - it's running good now...
From a pictures I see it looks like all is good with sewing. Installing part is where you have issue. I see that your vinyl is to stiff. It doesn't look "right" to me I also see that your templates is slightly too big. When installed - it have to fit snug and stretch around foam. Steaming ...

It's definitely tension issue. Either top or bottom :) To begin - we need pic of how your machine threaded.
Let's pretend it's correct - did you change thread size to smaller? Which will require bottom tension adjustment
I use just cheap spray glue and don't even spray whole piece if it's bigger. Just do light spray around perimeter.
After I stitch around I usually even pull foam from fabric so they get unstuck.
Yeah. Looks very sharp!
I decided to do some service and paint job to Seiko I got. Results so far :)
Going to replace some small parts and see if I can make it sew again
Btw, seam allowance is just some approx number universally picked. 1/2 inch in US, in Metric people use 10mm which is 2.7mm less. In bmw seats I took apart the have about 7mm or slightly over 1/4 allowance. And lot of times we just cut it off after done to remove bulk
It's a regular single reinforced seam Fig 1
You just sew two pieces together and then fold it on one side and go over with decorative stitch
Table legs in progress. They got 2 layers of primer now ready for paint. Weather is not cooperating in MO to spray outside so I'm waiting for at least 40F to do final layer.
You already answered partially: You need proper walking foot machine. Then you can get guide foot for it to help with alignment. s-l1000.jpg This piece is not hard to sew. Not easiest but much easier then headrests for example. Key is to let machine pull material. When it's crumbled like this you te...
Here we go - business idea for someone who sells on eBay :)
@Jayscanvas
Yep. It’s total nonsense from financial standpoint. I paid $100 to sandblast old frame. It’s going to be mine and personal with a story behind. But no savings here. And I got fancy 1100 watt servo coming in.. not cheap either.
Those links do not open, can you attach pics of what you talking about? I was thinking about something like that but not sure how well it will work:
Anyone tried skivers like this for upholstery leather? If it works but slow - it's OK. But if it doesn't work I'd rather not spend money.. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Leather-Craft-Edge-Splitter-Paring-Machine-Manual-Skiver-Peeler-Tools-15-Blades/163473027136?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26...
@Bondo497 I think it is important to set a goal on how ideally you want it and go from there. In my current project there is many little parts which can be cut from sides/etc. I can at least try to layout everything in best way to balance stretch and material use. All long pieces can be laid in dia...
@Cody
I've seen people recommend placing parts angled (not A or B) so it stretches both directions. It was recommendation when laying out on vinyl (kind that stretches one way only). I wonder if leather is the same and we should try to put it on an angle
Found info on hides. Picture shows best parts and stretch direction. So, I know which parts to use for top surfaces of seats/bolsters. Question remains - how to place templates on hide to take advantage of stretching? Red line shows stretching, 2 blue "sausages" is top of bolster for examp...
What is a proper way to cut for example bolster piece from a hide? I am talking about positioning template. Should it stretch front/back or side to side?
Also, does anybody have picture of hyde with stretch directions?
I haven't tried it myself but here is 2 tips: 1. When gluing foam to material - do it already radiused. You should have "bent" piece which you going to sew. Otherwise when you put cover on - your foam will compress under material. 2. Add another layer of fabric under sew foam. Lot of times...
Just a quick update. After I got this Seiko I realized I have 1 table and 2 heads. Had to fix that. Table which came with machine had really sturdy/solid frame also old/rusted. And top was bent. So, I got butcher block from a friend and went to make new table. Legs sent for sandblasting, will repain...
