Can anyone help me figure out what’s happening here.
With other work I’ve seen, the foam and the vinyl compress the same and meet halfway.
This is 12mm Cerex backed foam (scrim foam).
Is the foam too light and compressing completely and not allowing the vinyl to show the pleat?

I’ve tried the same thing, but with a calico backing as well. It’s better, but defeats the purpose of the scrim foam.

That's pretty common especially with 1/4" scrim. Usually once its stretches taunt on a seat it fixes this. If not you can spray contact cement on the pleat lines and glue them down to the seat or whatever your installing them on.

Thanks @John @Rug Dr.

So, is Scrim foam all the same, or is there softer and harder types available for different types of upholstery.?
I can see that soft foam would suit a soft fabric, but not so good for something harder like vinyl

They come in different densities and backings. Soft foam is just fine under vinyl and in most cases here I use what I got whether it half inch, quarter inch medium density, high density etc... especially for repair work.

I agree it's usually not a problem but on occasion[…]
